The Phalaenopsis Orchid is a Beautiful Addition to Gardens around the Globe

When looking for flora to cover your indoor or outdoor garden there are hundreds of plant choices, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. The name, phalaenopsis comes from the distinct look of the flower. Early botanists determined that the flower looks like a moth in flight, giving rise to the Greek name for “moth like.” Many people, citing their inability to pronounce phalaenopsis, have named this type of orchid the moth orchid.  If you chose to purchase a phalaenopsis for your home or garden, you will have over sixty different varieties to choose from. These orchids were primarily found in the balmier and warm climates of Southeast Asia and northern parts of Australia.  However, a small island off the coast of Taiwan was been named Orchid Island after the abundance of phalaenopsis orchid species early explorers found there.

Phalaenopsis orchid is a unique plant with a growth pattern unlike many other flowering plants.  Many of the species grow best attached to other plants while there are some species which grow optimally if they are attached to a rock or other mineral substance. An orchid usually requires a lot of humidity, and in the wild, the phalaenopsis orchid is found underneath the canopies of a forest. They generally will grow well though in any climate as long as they are not exposed to direct sunlight.  Certain species are better suited to each climate zone though, so be sure to find the species that is best suited to your climate zone before you purchase a phalaenopsis orchid.
