The Moth Orchid is a Unique and Wonderful Plant Which You Can Grow Indoors or Out

There are few plants which are as well suited to growing inside of your house as outside. Among these plants, one of the most beautiful and unique is the moth orchid – a flowering plant with natural characteristics that greatly separate it from its other flowering cousins. Among these orchid plants, there are over sixty varieties, each suited to different climates and each with its own unique color scheme. No matter where you live or what taste you have in colors, there is a moth orchid species that will suit your needs and your style.

While many people call this type of orchid the moth orchid, it is actually categorized under the name of phalaenopsis orchid. Since not many people can pronounce such a difficult Greek name, however, moth orchid has become the common name for the type of plant. In the wild most of these orchids are found in parts of Asia and Australia, with a rather large growth of them on aptly named Orchid Island just off the coast of Taiwan. Nearly every type of moth orchid is known as an epiphyte – a type of plant which grows attached to another plant. Alternatively, there are certain species of this unique plant which can grow best as a lithophyte which can grow best when attached to a rock or some other mineral from the earth.  Since they grow so well in atmospheres with lots of trees or rocks, you can generally find a moth orchid inhabiting a lowland forest.

This orchid is a great choice for your home or garden if you can supply it with the right environment. In many parts of the world, it is easier to grow a moth orchid indoors, as they do not grow well under harsh light condition. With climates that have bright sunlight, you should never try and grow your orchid outdoors unless you have adequate shade trees or awnings that can protect the plant from direct sunlight. No matter how dry, cold or moist your climate is, you will have a well growing orchid so long as you can keep it out of direct sunlight most of the time.
